This Day in History: March 20, 1854

One hundred and fifty five years ago in Ripon, Wisconsin, former members of the Whig Party meet to establish a new party to oppose the spread of slavery into the western territories. The Whig Party, which was formed in 1834 to oppose the "tyranny" of then President Andrew Jackson, had shown itself incapable of coping with the national crisis over slavery.

With the successful introduction of the Kansas-Nebraska Bill of 1854, an act that dissolved the terms of the Missouri Compromise and allowed slave or free status to be decided in the territories by popular sovereignty, the Whigs disintegrated. By February 1854, anti-slavery Whigs had begun meeting in the upper midwestern states to discuss the formation of a new party. One such meeting, in Wisconsin on March 20, 1854, is generally remembered as the founding meeting of the Republican Party.

The Republicans rapidly gained supporters in the North, and in 1856 their first presidential candidate, John C. Fremont, won 11 of the 16 Northern states. By 1860, the majority of the Southern slave states were publicly threatening secession if the Republicans won the presidency. In November 1860, Republican Abraham Lincoln was elected president over a divided Democratic Party, and six weeks later South Carolina formally seceded from the Union. Within six more weeks, five other Southern states had followed South Carolina's lead, and in April 1861 the Civil War began when Confederate shore batteries under General P.G.T. Beauregard opened fire on Fort Sumter in South Carolina's Charleston Bay.

The Civil War firmly identified the Republican Party as the party of the victorious North, and after the war the Republican-dominated Congress forced a "Radical Reconstruction" policy on the South, which saw the passage of the 13th, 14th, and 15th amendments to the Constitution and the granting of equal rights to all Southern citizens. By 1876, the Republican Party had lost control of the South, but it continued to dominate the presidency until the election of Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1933.

Add some political power to your cuff and show your party loyalty with this pair of Republican Cufflinks. The perfect way to show your GOP Pride in vibrant red, white and blue enamel on a sterling silver setting.

Not a fan of the elephant? Not to worry... Political cufflinks also available for the Democrat voter.

Cufflinks in the News: Clinton's Christmas

As a thank you to 600 of her closest supporters and aides, Clinton gifted pendants and cufflinks representing the 18 million cracks in the glass ceiling that were created during her time on the campaign trail.

Her sterling silver pendants and cufflinks represent the 18 million people who voted for her during her run for the White House. Shattered glass of car windows gave Mann the inspiration he needed to achieve the perfect look. In conceding defeat on June 8, Clinton, who came closer than any other woman to winning a major party's presidential nomination, said: "Although we weren't able to shatter that highest, hardest glass ceiling this time, thanks to you, it's got about 18 million cracks in it."

"We started in early November and we madly produced prototypes that we over-nighted to Washington," he said. "Finally, we decided on a more simplistic design."

Gift of the Day: Cufflinks
As seen on the daily gift guide for the Modern Gentleman.

Cufflinks are a great gift for men for the holidays. Here are 5 reasons why cufflinks make a perfect gift:

You are providing someone with a story to tell as to how they acquired them.

Cufflinks posses and heirloom quality that could keep them in the family for generations.

Cufflinks are a great way to express a hobby or a passion. While you may love NASCAR, wearing a fire proof Jeff Gordon suit to the office isn't recommendable. However, wearing a pair of Gordon cufflinks would be suit-able.

A collector can never own too many cufflinks.

There are no sizing issues with cufflinks; one size fits all.

Fashionable Genes

As Seen in Newsweek

Blue Enamel Helix Cufflinks
by Lavin Paris available at www.cufflinks.com
.

"The building block of life, DNA, is getting a life of its own. "Spit parties" have become the latest social-networking craze, like the one recently organized by 23andMe, a genetic-testing company named for the number of chromosome pairs in the human genome and founded by Linda Avey and Anne Wojcicki, wife of Google cofounder Sergey Brin. Combining genetic testing with gin and tonics, friends and family compare congenital predispositions by sharing test results ($399; 23andme.com). Hereditary blueprints can also be turned into personalized perfumes and colognes ($135; mydnafragrance.com). For a perfectly accurate self-portrait, humans can map their—or their pets'—genetic coding in one-of-a-kind works of art that resemble columns of blocks ($550; momastore.org), or place it on canvas, sheet aluminum or photographic paper ($720; dna-art.co.uk). Lanvin cufflinks depict the magic molecule ($130; cufflinks.com), while Genetic Denim has created men's and women's jeans that are labeled XY or XX ($220; geneticdenim.com). "DNA is the one thing that separates you from every other person in the world," says designer Ali Fatourechi. So why not flaunt it?"

Winehouse Links to Louis!

I wouldn't ordinarily say Amy Winehouse is someone who should have people follow her lead, but featured in The Sun today was a great gift idea, thanks to Winehouse.

Winehouse ties up Louis

TROUBLED star Amy Winehouse stunned X Factor judge Louis Walsh — by sending him a green tie and shamrock cufflinks.
The gift from posh London store Selfridges arrived for Irish Louis just before he went on air on Saturday.

Rehab singer Amy, 25, was thanking him for looking after goddaughter Dionne, who visited the ITV1 show’s Wembley studios.

A source said: “It came nicely wrapped up. Best of all was the handwritten note.

“I very much doubt that Amy wrote it herself as at the end of note there was just a scrawling signature in completely different writing.

“Louis was stunned.”

While Winehouse doesn't usually make headlines for practicing good fashion, she truly found the perfect gift. A tie and cufflink combo is a great Christmas idea.

This set is from designer Babette Wasserman. This tie is hand made of pure silk in Como, Italy where the best quality of silk and manufacturing is found. Complemented by a chrome label tag and a pair of round silver plated cufflinks featuring vivid blue bubble design and a fixed back.
