Seth Rogan, The Green Hornet - Stylish Movie Of The Year?

Being home for the holidays allowed me to catch up with old friends, family and a bit of television. I recall a while back hearing that Seth Rogan was cast in the upcoming Green Hornet movie. Probably due to the less than lethal fighting scenes in Pineapple Express, I didn't think Seth Rogan was an action star. He's slimmed down and after viewing some of the trailers, he may be in the most stylish action movie of the year. He along with Jay Chou, looking dapper in a tie bar, make quite a crime fighting duo as the Green Hornet and Kato.

Are You Ready For Some AFL Football?

By half time of last night's Sunday Night Football game between the Bears and Packers, I had hit a football coma. Between watching another crazy weekend of NCAA on Saturday and the opening weekend of NFL, I felt like a kid in a candy store who had eaten everything he could get his hands on. Only, unlike the kid in the candy store, I felt good. A little drowsy, but good. Adrian Peterson is dropping jaws, the Dallas Cowboys are winning, Tom Brady is back and football season is back, making all good with the world.

The first Monday Night Football games of the regular season are tonight and fittingly, they pit 4 AFL teams against each other. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the AFL, which merged with the NFL in 1970. The NFL has introduced the "legacy" collection re-introducing these wonderful logos. Jeans & What Not To Wear

I love jeans, I actually wear them every day. I wear jeans so often that the tan leather seats in my car are stained blue from the constant presence of denim on them. Summers are annoyingly hot here in Texas, but August brings about many things, mainly football and the fall. And from NY to Dallas to LA, when cooler weather breezes in, a great look to compliment jeans is wearing a great sweater, blazer or sport coat. Wait a few weeks for the temperature to fall a bit and you will see well dressed men at dinner or up at the bar wearing jeans, a nicely pressed dress shirt and a sport coat with cufflinks peeking through the bottom of the cuffs.

Like with anything you wear, the sum is greater than the parts so make sure not to get in the mindset that just because you are wearing a dressier coat that you can skimp on the shoes or belt. Another fashion no-no I have come across is the suit jacket without the suit. Often called an orphaned jacket, suit jackets are made to be matched with their pant counterparts. In rare instances, if you are in a pinch, you can sometimes pair a solid color suit jacket with your casual look. But for the most part, the cut and button type of a suit coat are usually all wrong when paired with jeans.

Here is an answer posted from Esquire Fashion Director Nick Sullivan on the difference between a Blazer, Sport Coat and Suit Jacket -

In the U.S., blazer has come to mean anything that has sleeves and lapels and is worn with unmatched pants, but there are key differences between the three items you mention. In Europe and the tonier parts of the States — especially any place where messing about in boats is a big part of summer — a blazer [above, left] usually means a patch — pocket, navy — blue jacket with gold or (occasionally) silver buttons. The landlubberly sport coat [above, center], meanwhile, originally derived from the tweedy, robust coats worn while assisting in the untimely end of feathered or furry creatures. It had pockets with flaps, often an extra flapped ticket pocket, and was of softer construction than a suit jacket. As a modern fashion item, it should still retain the somewhat rustic, earthy look of its forebear (even when made in cashmere).

Finally, a suit jacket [above, right] will always be made of the finer stuff, i.e., worsted wool, and smooth to the touch. Still, all that said, it's rarely that cut — and — dried.

This Day in History: July 2, 1937

In 1937, American aviator, Amelia Earhart, along with her navigator Frederick Noonan, was reported missing while flying over the Pacific Ocean.

The pair were attempting to fly around the world when something went wrong in what was said to be the hardest leg of the journey: Lae, New Guinea to Howland Island, a tiny island that sits 2,227 miles away.

Messages from Earhart were reported to the US Coast Guard cutter, Itasca, that the Lockheed, was lost and low on fuel. No trace of Earhart or Noonan was ever found.

Earhart was the first woman to ever receive the Distinguished Flying Cross for becoming the first aviatrix to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean.

Along with setting many other records, she was an establish author and played a key part in the foundation of The Ninety-Nines, an organization for female pilots.

2009 NBA Draft

NBA commissioner David Stern takes some time to pose with a few of the 2009 draftees.

Adorning prominent accessories, first draft pick, Blake Griffin, relaxes before the draft begins. His choice of matching his pocket square to his plum French cuff shirt is a good move. Paired with his silver tie bar, Griffin's dark ensemble injected with fresh color is a slam-dunk!

Number 4 draft pick, Tyeke Evans, will be adding a Kings jersey this season. Here you can see an elegant pinstripe suit can reach outside of the black and white box. His color wheel of choice was pink as he sports a striped dress shirt with complimenting tie and pocket square. Drafts have a tendency to show who is at the top of his game, on and off the court.

Representing Syracuse was Number 6 draft pick, Jonny Flynn. The Minnesota Timberwolves picked the 6-foot guard to join their team and maybe teach the rest of players a thing or two about how to assemble a suit with style and sophistication. It is hard to believe at just 20, he can see how attaching a simple accessory, like a tie clip, can create a sleek, polished look. Apparently in between conditioning Flynn has been keeping up with his style guides!

Timepiece 101

While you may know the best watch designers, do you know how they tick?

The best way to pick out a watch is to first understand its functionality and what components go into a good watch. Names can only get you so far, so let's take a dive into what lies behind the name of the watch you wear on your wrist.

Case

The case is the chassis of a watch. Sometimes they are made with stainless steel, other times titanium.

Crystal

This is the face of the timepiece, the glass disk that keeps the hand and dial safe from the elements. Crystals don't have to be made of crystal, they are often acrylic, mineral glass or sapphire. Sapphire is a great element in a watch because of its ability to resist scratching. Acrylic is most prone to little scratches, but it is also the easiest to buff. So it all boils down to what you prefer more.

Dial

The dial is the actual face of the watch, the canvas for the numbers and minute markers.

Crown

The crown is the small turning knob used to set the time, date and any other changing feature. Some crowns screw down when not in use, and others are designed to be pushed in.

Crown Guard

Designed in most sports watches, this part does just what it sounds like. Protecting the crown from damage due to the physical activity, which the watch was designed for.

Bezel

The bezel of a watch can be fixed or rotatable depending on the design. Scuba divers often use an adjustable bezel to keep track of the amount of time they have been submerged by aligning the minute hand with the 00 on the bezel before descending.

Lugs

The lugs in a watch secure the straps or bracelet of the watch that wrap around your wrist to the ticking clock.

Caseback

This is the back of the watch that rests on your wrist. This is the piece that is usually removed in order to access the internal parts of the watch. Some designers use a clear back for the people who like to tinker and know how things operate.

Hour Markers

Bet you can guess this one! They are the dashes, dots or other various symbols used to indicate the hours that are not numbered.

Hands

While most of us learned what these puppies were back in the 1st grade, it is one of the most crucial pieces of a watch. Hands point to the minute and hour, allowing you to read your watch. Some feature a second hand for the man who needs to know exactly what time it is!

Date Windows

High quality watches almost always offer the date. It usually hangs out in the 3 o'clock position. The crown adjusts this function.

Cyclops

With watches that feature a date, a bubble that magnifies the numbers is often included to make the date more legible.

Bracelet

A bracelet wraps around your wrist to keep the time available at a moments notice. Bracelets tend to stick with durable metals like titanium and steel. The other option to a bracelet is a Strap.

A strap is most commonly made out of leather, but in the case of a sports watch or an underwater watch, rubber is often used.

And last, but most certainly not least, the Buckle or Clasp

This piece is crucial in keeping your watch snug. This is the hardware that connects the two straps or ends of the bracelet. The most common buckle is called a Tang. The tang is similar to a belt where a pin slides through a notch to the other side. There is also the deployant, which folds the buckle attached to both sides of the strap and snaps back into place. On a bracelet, the buckle is referred to as a clasp.

Having a closet full of designer clothes doesn't mean much if you can't coordinate them. It is important for a man to know how to combine different elements of fashion, like fabrics, colors and patterns, to create a knock out ensemble. The definitive guide for style has come up with some handy tips and key rules to take into consideration when getting dressed for the day.

Wear color wisely
Many men stick to a neutral color palette under the assumption that they can’t go wrong with a closet full of black, brown, blue, and white. A wardrobe devoid of color, however, can be drab. Throwing in a few splashes of color here and there can really pick up even the most basic outfit and make you seem incredibly fashion-forward. For men, less is best when it comes to color, so begin slowly. Use color as an accessory or only wear one boldly hued garment at a time. And of course, make sure you know which colors are best (and worst) suited to your skin tone.

Be pattern savvy
In order to avoid looking like you’ve just escaped from a psychiatric hospital, learning how to select coordinating patterns for your ensembles is crucial. It does take a bit of effort to memorize the definitions of the most common patterns, but doing so will help you achieve a unique look because you’ll be able to break free of the safe, solid-colors-only style rut that too many men find themselves in. There are approximately 10 popular patterns of which you should be aware of, including houndstooth, herringbone, windowpane checks, sharkskin, barley corn, and pinstripe. Along with being able to recognize these common patterns, you should also know what they pair well with and when to wear them: The window pane check, for example, is a simple pattern of plain squares that is commonly found on dress shirts and should be teamed with a coordinating blazer that complements an accent color in the shirt.

Learn how to mix prints
Though you may eventually decide you can live without incorporating houndstooth into your wardrobe, you’ll still be faced with the dilemma of how to combine a patterned shirt with a printed tie. As long as you follow four basic rules, you minimize your chances of ruining otherwise perfectly good ensembles. First, make sure that the dominant color in your shirt appears in the accents on your tie. Second, when wearing a checked shirt with a checked tie, keep the print on your body smaller than the one around your neck. Whether or not you’re wearing checks, you’ll want to vary the weights between the patterns as donning two garments with prints of the same size is visually overwhelming. Finally, when in doubt about how to combine prints, just remember that a small print next to a larger one will quickly create an elegant ensemble. If your tie has a small print, for instance, your shirt should have a larger one.

Match your shoes with your pants
Wearing the wrong pair of shoes can destroy your entire look -- even if you happen to be dressed to the nines in a bespoke suit. When selecting shoes, you need to take both their color and style into consideration in order to determine if they will complement your outfit. For navy suits or dress pants, try black, camel, tan, or oxblood-hued shoes. With gray, opt for black, oxblood or camel-colored footwear. Common styles of footwear you’ll want to brush up on include loafers, oxfords, dress boots, and monk-strap shoes. Finally, details such as whether or not your shoes have wing tips, cap toes, laces, or broguing should be kept in mind when you’re searching for the right shoe for a particular pair of pants.

Master layering
There are two major benefits of layering: it enables you to dress for variable weather conditions so that you’re always comfortable, and it lets you display your fantastic sense of style. The most important rule for layering is that every piece you’re wearing should be able to stand on its own as well as with your ensemble as a whole. Another important guideline to follow is that thinner garments should be worn closer to your body for added warmth and to create a sleek, pulled-together appearance. Furthermore, when wearing multiple layers, don’t be afraid to play around and have some fun with your style. In fact, layering is one of the best ways to sneak color into your wardrobe and mix the high with the low for a thoroughly individual look.

A shirt collar is a precarious thing, and a little laundry shrinkage can distort the lie of its tips. But if you flip over the collar and see a textured weave — called a Panama weave, and a staple of Kiton shirts like this one — that means it better resists shrinking and twisting.

This Day in History: June 19, 1885

On this day in 1885, the Statue of Liberty arrives in New York Harbor as a symbol of Franco-American friendship.

A mere nine years late, the 300-foot statue was a gift from the people of France, who had been the Patriots’ primary foreign ally in the War for Independence, to those of United States as a celebration of the Declaration of Independence’s centenary in 1876.

Lady Liberty was designed by Eugene-Emmanuel Viollet-le-Duc and Alexandre-Gustave Eiffel. Frederic-Auguste Bartholdi sculpted the statue that was originally named "Liberty Enlightening the World."

After completion, the statue was disassembled into 350 different sections and shipped to the United States in 214 crates. Another year later, on October 28, 1886, the statues reconstruction was completed and the dedication ceremony commenced, led by then President Grover Cleveland.

The statue’s pedestal bears the words of poet Emma Lazarus, written in 1883:
Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me. I lift my lamp beside the golden door.

When the Ellis Island immigration center opened its doors on an island in New York Harbor near the Statue of Liberty in 1892, Lazarus’ words welcomed the 12 million immigrants who passed by “Lady Liberty” after trying trans-Atlantic journeys on their way to becoming Americans.

This Day in History: June 8, 1966

The AFL and NFL announce merger.

On this day in 1966, the rival National Football League (NFL) and American Football League (AFL) announce that they will merge. The first "Super Bowl" between the two leagues took place at the end of the 1966 season, though it took until the 1970 season for the leagues to unite their operations and integrate their regular season schedules.

In 1965, the AFL scored a television contract with NBC. That same year, New York Jets owner Sonny Werblin lured quarterback Joe Namath out of the University of Alabama to the AFL with the biggest contract in pro football history. The NFL’s prediction and hope that the AFL would field only second-rate players and washed-up former NFL players was not to be: Instead, the two leagues began to compete over fans, players and coaches. An unspoken agreement that one league would not sign the other league’s players was broken in 1966 when the NFL’s New York Giants signed place-kicker Pete Gogolak away from the AFL’s Buffalo Bills. As neither league could afford a bidding war, owners soon began to talk of a merger.

Under the merger agreement announced on June 8, 1966, the new league would be called the NFL, and split into the American Football Conference (AFC) and the National Football Conference (NFC) All eight of the original AFL teams would all be absorbed by the NFL, unlike in 1946 when the NFL merged with the rival All-America Football Conference but only took in its Baltimore, Cleveland and San Francisco franchises and dissolved four other teams.

The Super Bowl, played between the AFC and NFC champions at the end of every NFL season, is now the most watched televised sporting event in the world with more than 140 million viewers.

Always on the look out for good fashion advice, I find that Gear Patrol is a great fashion resource for men. There I found this article in a 30 day series; How to be a Better Man in 30 Days.

Starting with...

First, lets get to know some of the widely available men’s shirt patterns. A great starting point for any man.

A. Single Color
B. Striped, Fine Striped
C. Bengal Striped
D. Grid, Windowpane
E. Gingham Check
F. Glen-Plaid (a.k.a. Prince of Wales Check)
G. Woven

Now for the Simple Guide to Matching Shirts and Ties

Single Color - Harmonious, solid color dress shirt and tie combinations are found by picking colors of the same family and relation. Choose color families that have the same base colors (red, blue or yellow). This does not mean different shades of the same color (different hues of blue), but rather a color relation that carries through both the shirt and tie.

Striped, Fine Striped - Stick with simple ties. Yes, you can pair a striped tie along with a striped shirt, but they cannot be similar in stripe size. A textured tie works well, especially in a bold solid color. Make sure that you carry one color from your tie to your shirt or suit. It goes without saying that you should avoid a pinstriped suit when wearing a striped shirt/striped tie combo.

Bengal Striped - Bengal stripes are a robust pattern. Your tie should play back-up guitar here with a low profile repeating pattern. This editor’s personal take is to avoid dotted patterns.

Checkered and Gingham Check - When wearing checkered shirts you need to pay attention to the pattern. Keep the sizes different, even if the patterns on both are small or large. Again, tie the color back to another element of your outfit: shirt, suit, etc. Gingham checks are typically of lighter hue so pairing it with a dark tie (vert basic patterns work here) is your best choice.

Glen-Plaid (a.k.a. Prince of Wales Check) - Because Glen-Plaid is a bold pattern (on both suits and shirts), your best bet is to stick with a thick striped tie (varsity, gordian, club, gable). The axiom that a bold pattern is best offset with a subtle one does not apply. Glen-plaid requires a bold tie to pair properly, yet the entire effect can still be conservative.

Grid, Windowpane - One of the most effective shirt and tie combinations when paired properly. First, make sure a color matches between your and shirt and tie. Second: make sure that tie is patterned. You can go a little bolder on the pattern, but make sure you feel comfortable pulling it off. If it looks ostentatious to you in the privacy of your own home, it will look 10x so in public.

Woven - Woven dress shirts are an interesting beast because it’s their weave that give its pattern versus a strict design. If your woven shirt is light, then pair it with a darker tie with a similar stripe. If your dress shirt is very dark and you want to pair it with a light tie then you should reconsider today’s wardrobe. That is, unless you really miss the 1990’s.

Summer has officially arrived, which means it is time to break out the shorts and sandals!

However, when it comes to men’s footwear, no other type of shoe can present as many potential pitfalls as the sandal; sandals can be too feminine, too chunky, too hippy, or just downright ugly. The men's sandal walks a fine line when it comes to fashion dos and don’ts. Fortunately, following these men's sandals dos and don'ts will have you trotting to the shore or even a summer Friday at the office in sandaled style.

DONT'S

Don’t take a hike

When it comes to the worst offenders in the world of men’s sandals, ones designed for serious outdoor activity top the list. This variety looks more like a full-on shoe with oddball cutouts than a sleek summer sandal. No one would doubt its comfort or utility with a lug sole and all those synthetic water-absorbent materials. After all, something so hideous must have been created to serve a purpose. However, function should never -- and doesn’t have to -- completely trump style. If you’re going to take a hike, do it with a pair of real boots, not a stout sandal.

Don’t go granola

Birkenstocks and Tevas are better suited for a sit-in than a night out. You probably owned at least one pair of these hippy-esque shoes at summer camp and wore them with a not-so subtly witty A&F T-shirt, cargo shorts and hemp necklace. It’s time to grow up. A real man’s sandal should channel casual sophistication, not a bonfire. The ironic thing about these granola shoes is that they are supposed to somehow be practical. The relatively hefty price tag and inability to withstand moisture say otherwise. One stroll on the lakeshore with these sandals, and you’ll be waiting days for them to dry out. In the meantime, you’re left smelling like a dirty locker room.

Don’t cover up

It’s difficult to say how exactly the sock and sandal combination came into existence. By contrast, it’s astoundingly easy to spot the offenders every summer. Just go to your local amusement park, museum or outlet shopping center -- basically anyplace where there are European tourists en masse. You’ll be bound to find argyle sock-covered feet strangled in a sandal gasping for air. Some even wear it unabashedly as though an open-toed shoe were meant to be corrupted in the most heinous of ways. It’s a shocking reality for a continent that exports some of the best fashion to every corner of the earth, but this is one time you don’t want to go Euro.

Don’t buy in bulk

Some people might be surprised to find out that Dr. Martens still exist. The iconic, chunky black shoe/boot with yellow stitching certainly had its moment with mall rat teens in the '90s. What isn’t surprising is that if Dr. Martens were to make a sandal, it would be equally as cumbersome. The summer is supposed to be light and carefree, but wearing a shoe that looks like a block of wood on your foot doesn’t exactly radiate airiness. Thick foam and rubber-sole sandals with equally bulky uppers are just as offensive as the hiking type without any of the functionality.

Don’t slide around

Unless you’re a sideline soccer player, leave the athletic slip-ons at home. It may be easy and comfortable to slip your foot into a lightweight foam and rubber sandal, but it’s not a statement you ever want to make outside of your home or maybe an Astro Turf field. This is one sandal that, despite sturdiness, has a limited ability to survive outside of its normal habitat. No matter how your wear the slide, it will always make you look like you just came from soccer practice. Even a benched Beckham wouldn’t be able to pull this one off.

DOS
Do make an X to mark the spot

It can be downright difficult to find a men’s sandal that is both simple and stylish if you want something other than flip-flops. The solution: a cross-strap sandal. There are no bells and whistles here -- just two uncomplicated straps to hold your foot in place. It’s also the perfect sandal if you find a traditional flip-flop that slips on between your toes to be uncomfortable. Just be careful not to go with certain faux-leather types or you could risk looking like grandpa at the retirement home.

Do wear a Brazilian thong

A thong as a swimsuit is a definite no-no, but on your feet it's a different story. Havaiana flip-flops drifted ashore in the U.S. from the beaches of Brazil just two years ago. It’s hard to imagine a summer without the ease of this soft rubber sandal that doesn’t look like a cheap mess. The best thing about Havaianas is that they are inexpensive and come in over a dozen colors. This year, the flip-flop maker joined forces with GAP to expand their reach. If world domination in flip-flops is Havaiana’s plan, they are well on their way.

Do splurge on quality

There is something to be said for the ease of the surf culture and the style that surrounds it. Fortunately, splurging on quality in this department doesn’t have to break the bank. A pair in slightly antiqued, worn leather will mold to your foot after just a few weeks and easily become your go-to shoe for the summer. They hold up just as well at the beach as they do on the streets, so you can wear them with board shorts or jeans and a polo shirt. Either way, the scorching heat of summer will be no match for your comfortably cool feet.

This Day in History: May 22, 1977

Today in 1977 the first woman qualifies for the Indy 500.

Guthrie failed to finish the 1977 race due to mechanical troubles. The next year, however, she not only finished the race but landed in ninth place, a remarkable achievement considering her meager race funding. Guthrie explains her career beginning as the result of her passion for adrenaline rush and the purchase of her first sports car. "I've always loved adventure," she said. "I went parachuting when I was 16, and got my pilot's license when I was 17. I went to school for physics... and when I got out of school I bought a Jaguar, from my $125-a -week salary and my superb sense of moderation." After 13 years of racing, Guthrie's break came when she was asked to test a car at Indy. Her participation brought her immediate fame. Many men objected strongly to her driving at Indy. "The alarm and commotion took me by surprise," she said. "The woman part of my participation was irrelevant to anything on the track. But people thought we were plotting a revolution... they said women will endanger our lives." Guthrie responded to the criticism simply by racing the best she could. "In racing there is no room for a readout from your nervous system. Your body becomes part of the machine." Guthrie gave up her dream of becoming an Indy Car driver for financial reasons, which she cites as a major obstacle to women becoming involved in the sport. "Drag racing gets more women because it costs about a tenth of Indy Car racing. It's a very expensive sport. I managed to make do with $120,000 I got from Texaco, but most drivers have between two and three million dollars to work with."

Nolan Ryan pitches his first no-hitter in 1973.

On May 15, 1973, California Angel Nolan Ryan strikes out 12 Kansas City Royals and walks three to pitch the first no-hitter of his career.

Lynn Nolan Ryan, Jr. was born January 31, 1947, in Refugio, Texas and raised in Alvin, 12 miles southeast of Houston. As a high school sophomore, he was scouted by Red Murff of the New York Mets. Ryan’s coach told Murff of the young pitcher’s intimidating fastballs, so powerful they had broken catchers’ bones. Murff was impressed--his report said Ryan had the "best arm I’ve ever seen in my life."

Nolan joined the Mets in 1968, and was soon a highly regarded fireballer. In what is often pointed to as one of the most short-sighted moves in baseball history, the Mets traded Ryan to the Angels for third baseman Jim Fregosi after the 1971 season. Ryan went 19-16 in 1972, striking out 328 batters. Fregosi hit a disappointing .232 in 1972 then was sold to the Texas Rangers in early July 1973. Meanwhile, Ryan pitched his first no-no on this day in 1973, and then followed it up with a second on July 15 versus the Detroit Tigers in Tiger Stadium. Ryan struck out a total of 383 batters in 1973, setting a new major league record. He went on to throw five more no-hitters in his career, with the last coming on May 1, 1991, when he was 44 years old.

Ryan’s work ethic was the secret to his success. A believer in the theory that pitching power comes from the legs and not the arms, Ryan ran every day and chalked up his consistency and endurance to his strong legs. In 1983, Ryan broke the legendary Walter Johnson’s career strikeout record. He pitched for 27 years in the big leagues, with the Mets, Angels, Astros and Rangers. He struck out 5,714 batters in his career, breaking his own record 2,206 times. He was 324-292 for his career, with a 3.19 career ERA.

Nolan Ryan was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1999.

The Mummy is Moving!

This is the last weekend to see the National Geographic Exhibit, Tutankhamun and The Golden Age of The Pharaohs. For one last weekend in both Dallas and Atlanta, your family can explore the figures who guided ancient Egypt more than 3,000 years ago. The exhibition focuses on the 18th Dynasty, a 100-year period when Egypt was at the height of its power and the "golden age" of Egyptian artistry. This was the era when Tutankhamun and his ancestors reigned. The extensive array of more than 130 extraordinary artifacts from the tomb of Tutankhamun and other ancient Egyptian sites features 50 of Tutankhamun's burial objects, including his royal diadem and one of the four gold and precious stone inlaid canopic coffinettes that contained his mummified internal organs.

The 2 exhibits of The King and his crew will be relocating to the De Young Museum in San Francisco and the Children's Museum of Indianapolis. Tours of this piece of history will begin June 27, 2009 for both new locations.

Haute couture
Haute couture is a French term that describes high fashion. If an item is characterized as "haute couture," it means that it's custom-made. Haute couture connotes exclusivity, and one-of-a-kind clothes made from the finest quality materials that usually cost more than $10,000. You know, the kind of threads celebrities wear to upscale events like awards shows and movie premieres.

Prt--porter
Prt--porter is French for ready-to-wear, and is used to describe high-end designer wear. However, unlike haute couture, prt--porter clothing isn't one of a kind. Prt--porter clothing is pricey and you'll find it off the rack at high-end department stores and boutiques. Examples of popular prt--porter designers include Jean-Paul Gaultier, Dolce & Gabbana and Gucci (FYI: these designers also have haute couture collections).

Faux pas
A faux pas is a blunder that can occur in social settings, as well as in fashion. In other words, it's an error in (style) judgment that should be avoided at all cost. Common fashion faux pas include wearing white socks with dark trousers and wearing sunglasses indoors.

Glitterati
Glitterati is a term used to describe a crowd of attractive people who tend to be well-dressed, usually referred to as the elite.

Trs chic
Trs chic means very fashionable; it's usually used to describe a specific item, like a suit, for example, or as a compliment for a place or an event.

Pice de rsistance
In food lingo, plat de rsistance means main dish. In fashion, pice de rsistance is used to describe an important item, whether it's a must-have item of the season or an item that stands out from an ensemble.

Du jour
If it's an item du jour, that means it's ultra trendy.

Pass
The term pass is used to describe something that was once in style (see du jour), but no longer is; basically, it's a thing of the past.

Old-school
The term old-school is used to describe a fashion item that has a retro, vintage or classic look. A lot of old-school athletic wear (i.e. from the '70s and '80s) such as sneakers, tracksuits and T-shirts have been making a comeback.

But does anyone have any idea what they’re actually celebrating? Here are five things you didn’t know about your favorite pre-Memorial Day, post-St. Paddy’s excuse for getting wasted.

1- Cinco de Mayo commemorates a victory over France

Mexico owed money to a number of European countries, but in 1861 they went “defaulted student loan” and stopped paying. So France, whose army hadn’t been defeated in 50 years, decided they would force them to pay and, while they were at it, take the country over. French forces were larger, better equipped, and better trained. However, on May 5, 1862, near the city of Puebla, Mexicans armed with pitchforks and limited weaponry won The Battle of Puebla. They drove the French off -- until a year later when the French managed to take over after all. Still, Cinco de Mayo commemorates that brave and unlikely battle.

2- Cinco de Mayo isn’t Mexican Independence Day

Mexican Independence Day, or “Grito de Dolores” ("Cry of/from Dolores"), is celebrated on September 16, and commemorates Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla, a Catholic priest from the town of Dolores, declaring war against the Spaniards in 1810. He ordered his church’s bells be rung and preached revolt on the steps in front. Spain didn’t recognize their independence until 1821, after nearly a decade of war. A federal holiday, Mexicans celebrate the day with parades, ringing church bells and fiestas. So, basically, Cinco de Mayo has nothing to do with that.

3- Cinco de Mayo is celebrated in the U.S. on a wider scale than in Mexico

Cinco de Mayo is not a federal holiday in Mexico. It’s more of a regional holiday that’s celebrated primarily in and around Puebla. It first gained popularity in the U.S. during the 1950s and 1960s, due in part to the Good Neighbor policy, a U.S. government effort implemented at the time to reach out to neighboring countries. Mexican-Americans embraced the holiday as their own day to celebrate their heritage. Popular Chicano icons like Cesar Chavez became more associated with Cinco de Mayo than any mention of The Battle of Puebla.

4- They love Cinco de Mayo in Malta

Malta, a small island nation in the Mediterranean Sea where you’d be hard-pressed to find even one Mexican, knows of Cinco de Mayo because of one reason: Corona Extra, la cerveza mas fina. The beer began exporting to the United States in 1979, and saw a golden marketing opportunity in Cinco de Mayo. Corona is now sold in over 150 countries and is the fifth-best selling beer in the world. They’ve taken their Cinco de Mayo message all over. While there’s a movement called "Cinco de Mayo Con Orgullo," which promotes an alcohol-free, family-centric holiday, they’re losing the battle to skunky beer. Not even the Maltese are listening.

5- Chandler, Arizona celebrates Cinco de Mayo with chihuahua racing

Since the Mexican army stampeded a huge pack of chihuahuas in front of them when attacking the French, Chandler remembers the battle with chihuahua racing. Just kidding -- chihuahuas had nothing to do with the battle, but the races happen anyway. Have they no respect of culture? Apparently not, as they also crown a king and queen of the chihuahuas.

Dress the part.

You appearance will play a major role in presenting who you are and what you can do for said company. Office jobs require a suit and tie. As a general rule of thumb, it is better to be overdressed than under dressed.

Pay attention to details.

You can bet your future employer will be! Adding the finishing touches to your interview wardrobe will show you follow through like that in your day to day work habits as well. Cufflinks and tie bars are great pieces to add for interviews.

Body language is key.

This day holds a special place in every Ford fanatics heart. On this day in 1964, Ford introduced the Mustang to the world on the first day of the New York World's Fair in Flushing, Queens.

A new wave of muscle cars was born with the pony. Originally designed as a two seater, Ford's General Manager, Lee Iacocca, realized that what would really sell is a muscle car that can be used for something more. The Mustang brought in 22,000 sales in its first day on the showroom floor and one million cars were on the road by Mustang's 2nd birthday!

The Mustang was so successfully marketed, thanks in part to its introduction at the World's Fair, that it became one of Ford's best-selling models of all time. Ford profits soared after the release of the Mustang. Another of Iacocca's Mustang-related innovations was a new strategy of marketing upgrade packages for the car. On this day in 1965, a year into the Mustang's lifetime, Ford introduced the GT Equipment Group as an option on the Mustang, creating the first Mustang GT. Iacocca commented on the success of the package, "People want economy so badly they don't care how much they pay for it." The base price for the Mustang was a skinny $2,368, but buyers purchased an average of $1,000 worth of options.

Grooms come in one of two types.

Type A is completely involved from everything from checking out venue locations to working on invitation designs. They have compiled well thought out lists and maybe even started working on their vows months in advance.

And then there are Type B Grooms. The ones that like to participate in the cake tasting, but that is all they are really interested in. Well you are in luck!

Brides magazine has put together a guide for the Type B grooms out there.

Man-Datory

12 Months Before
Propose. OK, you did that already, or you wouldn't be reading (or being forced to read) this article. Did you give her a ring? If not, take her shopping—and practice getting down on one knee.

Tell your parents. They like her already, so how tough could this be?

Talk numbers. Who's going to pay for the wedding? Her parents, yours, the two of you, or some combination of the above? Discuss it with all relevant parties. Be honest, be brave, be real.

9 Months Before
Visit the officiant with your fiancée. Get used to the word "officiant." This is the man or woman who will marry you and possibly give you premarital counseling. If your fiancée has always dreamed of walking down the aisle to the William Tell Overture or exchanging vows written in haiku, this is the person whose approval you'll need.

Write half of the guest list. Your fiancée knows your closest friends and relatives, but what about Cousin Ernie from Milwaukee and those nice folks you lived next door to in fourth grade? (On second thought, cross off Ernie and the neighbors if you're not in touch anymore.) Write down a wish list of everyone you would like to invite; plan on whittling it down later when you compare notes.

Register for gifts. You'll be dining off the plates and drinking from the glasses for the rest of your life, too, so unless you don't mind staring at pink china for a few decades, offer an opinion if your fiancée gets too girly with her choices. Think of this as your opportunity to pick out things you both like. And call dibs on the scan gun.

Choose your best man and ushers. Pick people with whom you have a strong bond. The buddy you've known since summer camp? Definitely. The blogger who shares your belief that Stripperella was Pamela Anderson's finest work? Definitely not.

Go see photographers, caterers, bakers, and the rest. Do it because you love her—and because you might get some free cake.

6 Months Before
Arrange the honeymoon. Think about places that have always fascinated you. Not sure? Consider your hobbies. If you like riding horses, Google "dude ranch." Or try "windsurfing" or "18th-century cathedrals" or "shopping for fabulous jewelry." (Oh, sorry, that last one was for your fiancée.)

3 Months Before
Figure out your clothes. The guys in your wedding party wear the same thing you do. (The dads can wear something similar or an exact match.) If it's a tuxedo or morning coat, you all need to be fitted, unless you already own formal garb. E-mail everyone the details: store name and address, when to go, what to order. Or put your best man in charge.

Purchase gifts for the wedding party. Gifts for the friends and family in the wedding ceremony are normally given as a token of appreciation for being there for you on your big day. Engravable gifts are a great way to personalize the gift. Cufflinks, money clips and flasks are very good starters.

He is thrilled by the snatch, by the wrist, the sight of a bare shoulder. He likes the crease of a bent knee. A man doesn't point out that he did the dishes.

A man looks out for children. Makes them stand behind him.

A man knows how to bust balls.

A man has had liquor enough in his life that he can order a drink without sounding breathless, clueless, or obtuse. When he doesn't want to think, he orders bourbon or something on tap.

A man welcomes the coming of age. It frees him. It allows him to assume the upper hand and teaches him when to step aside.

Maybe he never has, and maybe he never will, but a man figures he can knock someone, somewhere, on his ass.

He does not rely on rationalizations or explanations. He doesn't winnow, winnow, winnow until truths can be humbly categorized, or intellectualized, until behavior can be written off with an explanation. He doesn't see himself lost in some great maw of humanity, some grand sweep. That's the liberal thread; it's why men won't line up as liberals.

A man gets the door. Without thinking.

He stops traffic when he must.

A man resists formulations, questions belief, embraces ambiguity without making a fetish out of it. A man revisits his beliefs. Continually. That's why men won't forever line up with conservatives, either.

A man knows his tools and how to use them — just the ones he needs. Knows which saw is for what, how to find the stud, when to use galvanized nails.

A miter saw, incidentally, is the kind that sits on a table, has a circular blade, and is used for cutting at precise angles. Very satisfying saw.

A man knows how to lose an afternoon. Drinking, playing Grand Theft Auto, driving aimlessly, shooting pool.

He knows how to lose a month, also.

A man listens, and that's how he argues. He crafts opinions. He can pound the table, take the floor. It's not that he must. It's that he can.

A man is comfortable being alone. Loves being alone, actually. He sleeps.

Or he stands watch. He interrupts trouble. This is the state policeman. This is the poet. Men, both of them.

A man loves driving alone most of all.

Style — a man has that. No matter how eccentric that style is, it is uncontrived. It's a set of rules.

He understands the basic mechanics of the planet. Or he can close one eye, look up at the sun, and tell you what time of day it is. Or where north is. He can tell you where you might find something to eat or where the fish run. He understands electricity or the internal-combustion engine, the mechanics of flight or how to figure a pitcher's ERA.

A man does not know everything. He doesn't try. He likes what other men know.

A man can tell you he was wrong. That he did wrong. That he planned to. He can tell you when he is lost. He can apologize, even if sometimes it's just to put an end to the bickering.

A man does not wither at the thought of dancing. But it is generally to be avoided.

A man watches. Sometimes he goes and sits at an auction knowing he won't spend a dime, witnessing the temptation and the maneuvering of others. Sometimes he stands on the street corner watching stuff. This is not about quietude so much as collection. It is not about meditation so much as considering. A man refracts his vision and gains acuity. This serves him in every way. No one taught him this — to be quiet, to cipher, to watch. In this way, in these moments, the man is like a zoo animal: both captive and free. You cannot take your eyes off a man when he is like that. You shouldn't. You're dead right. Until the middle of the 20th century, it was traditional for boys to be dressed in pink (a derivative of red, thought to be the most decisive, masculine color) and girls in light blue (which in Christian circles symbolizes virginity, with the Virgin Mary often depicted in light-blue robes). What caused the switch is hard to make out — we suspect it might have something to do with the appearance of Superman in his blue jumpsuit — but men can still pull off pink, so long as the particular shade is restrained (avoid anything too light or bright) and the number of pink items in an outfit is strictly limited to one (i.e., a tie, a striped shirt, a pair of pants).

So maybe dressing in pink from head to toe wouldn't be the best idea, but why not start by adding a little confidence to your cuff.

This Day in History: March 20, 1854

One hundred and fifty five years ago in Ripon, Wisconsin, former members of the Whig Party meet to establish a new party to oppose the spread of slavery into the western territories. The Whig Party, which was formed in 1834 to oppose the "tyranny" of then President Andrew Jackson, had shown itself incapable of coping with the national crisis over slavery.

With the successful introduction of the Kansas-Nebraska Bill of 1854, an act that dissolved the terms of the Missouri Compromise and allowed slave or free status to be decided in the territories by popular sovereignty, the Whigs disintegrated. By February 1854, anti-slavery Whigs had begun meeting in the upper midwestern states to discuss the formation of a new party. One such meeting, in Wisconsin on March 20, 1854, is generally remembered as the founding meeting of the Republican Party.

The Republicans rapidly gained supporters in the North, and in 1856 their first presidential candidate, John C. Fremont, won 11 of the 16 Northern states. By 1860, the majority of the Southern slave states were publicly threatening secession if the Republicans won the presidency. In November 1860, Republican Abraham Lincoln was elected president over a divided Democratic Party, and six weeks later South Carolina formally seceded from the Union. Within six more weeks, five other Southern states had followed South Carolina's lead, and in April 1861 the Civil War began when Confederate shore batteries under General P.G.T. Beauregard opened fire on Fort Sumter in South Carolina's Charleston Bay.

The Civil War firmly identified the Republican Party as the party of the victorious North, and after the war the Republican-dominated Congress forced a "Radical Reconstruction" policy on the South, which saw the passage of the 13th, 14th, and 15th amendments to the Constitution and the granting of equal rights to all Southern citizens. By 1876, the Republican Party had lost control of the South, but it continued to dominate the presidency until the election of Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1933.

Hopefully, yesterdays post about NCAA basketball has gotten you riled up and ready to go, but here are a few things you might not have known about March Madness found on the AskMen.com site.

1- March Madness bracket odds are over 9-quintillion-to-1

The first thing you didn't know about March Madness is that the odds of you picking a perfect March Madness bracket are not just horrible, they're almost impossibly bad. You have a substantially better shot at winning the Powerball than you do at picking a perfect bracket.

There are a total of 9,223,372,036,854,775,808 possible bracket outcomes, making the odds of a perfect bracket over 9.2-quintillion-to-1. In fact, the odds are so bad that, according to RJ Bell at Pregame.com, if every individual alive in the world completed a bracket, the odds are a billion-to-one against any of them being perfect.

2- March Madness winners keep the winning court

We're all familiar with the shot of the winning coach snipping the net from the rim; it's a symbolic moment that caps off March Madness, and up until 1986 it was really all the NCAA allowed the team to keep.

As of 1986, however, teams have been given the actual hardwood court they won the championship on, and they are free to do with it as they see fit. Some schools have repainted it and used the hardwood for their own home court, while others have sold the court in pieces, and others have done nothing at all with it.

3- $2.5 billion is illegally bet on March Madness each year

Another thing you didn't know about March Madness is how much is bet illegally on the tournament each year. The FBI puts this figure at around $2.5 billion, with just a small percentage of this amount taking place in the betting capital of the world, Las Vegas.

One in 10 Americans play March Madness brackets, whether online, among an office pool or just a group of friends and associates, and fans eagerly anticipate those brackets. Nationwide, it's a massive annual betting event, among the biggest in the nation.

4- The NCAA does not profit from March Madness

March Madness is an event worth billions of dollars in revenue thanks to a hefty television broadcast contract, but in lieu of its own revenue distribution plan, the NCAA does not keep the profits; rather, they are distributed among the schools and conferences playing in the tournament.

A fraction (one-sixth) of the revenue goes toward participating schools based on how many Division I sports teams they field; another fraction (one-third) is doled out to participating schools based on the number of scholarships they hand out; and, finally, a full one-half of the entire revenue generated goes to the conferences based on their performance in the previous six NCAA men's basketball tournaments.

5- No. 16 seeds are a March Madness lost cause

Finally, the last thing you didn't know about March Madness is the utter futility of the No. 16 seed. Since the NCAA expanded the tournament to 64 teams, No. 16 seeds have a despairing record of 0-for-96. Assuming this trend continues in 2009, those seeds will be an even 0-for-100. To make matters worse, far more often than not these seeds lose by more than 10 points.

The closest a No. 16 seed has ever come to beating a No. 1 seed occurred in 1990, when unknown Kentucky-based Murray State took top-seeded Michigan State into overtime, ultimately losing 75-71.
